Goals
- Increase public awareness through education on the issue of abuse of older persons
- Support the community's ability to address the issue of abuse of older persons
- Promote opportunities for research and facilitate access to resources
- Assist with training for the prevention, detection and intervention of abuse of older persons
- Advocate for public policy that supports the rights of all older persons in our diverse community
Terms of Reference
Purpose of Council - Mission Statement including beliefs and goals
Membership information - Categories, Organizations, Agencies, Volunteers, Businesses, or Interested Parties who adhere to the principles and values adopted by the Council
Full Member - Entitled to a vote on Council matters / receives minutes / makes a regular commitment to the work of the Council (attendance, ad hoc & sub committees, PR events, etc.)
Associate Member - Not entitled to a vote on Council matters / entitled to receive minutes. Role is to be available for consultation on special projects / committed to the mission statement of the Council
Corporate Member - A corporate partnership or business organization offering financial support to the work of the Council
Terms of Office
- two year term of office
- maximum of two terms
- elections will be held to allow overlap of personnel (ie. two elections each term)
- positions: chairperson, vice chairperson, secretary, treasurer
Voting
- full members only may vote
- those in attendance at a called meeting will constitute a quorum
- voting by proxy is available for those unable to vote in person
- one vote per agency / business
- all voting members will be notified in advance of a meeting in which there will be voting
Meetings
- Total of 9 per year
- Meetings held the last Thursday of each month - 9:00 to 11:00 am at Sackville Hill Seniors Recreation Centre, 780 Upper Wentworth St., Hamilton
- Within this framework, 2 meetings are training sessions and 1 is the Annual General Meeting (held in November)
- Executive Committee members will meet at the call of the Chair
- Sub Committee and Ad Hoc committee members will select their own chairs. They work under the auspices of and with Council approval
- All Chairs are responsible to provide written reports to the Council
Mission Statement
Our mission is to increase our community's ability to recognize and respond to the abuse of all older persons
In pursuit of our mission, we believe:
- All older persons have the right to live free from abuse and neglect
- All older persons have the right to live with dignity and respect
- All older persons have the right to self-determination including the freedom to make informed choices
- All older persons have the right to live meaningful and productive lives
